Black gram (Vigna mungo L.) is a short-duration crop commonly cultivated on bunds around paddy fields. It is cultivated across the Terai and mid-hill regions. However, its productivity is constrained by low yields, as well as susceptibility to pests and diseases. It is one of Nepal’s most important pulse crops—locally known as kalo daal or maas ko daal. As the second most important pulse after lentil, it is grown on approximately 28,383 hectares and contributes about 6.39% to the national pulse production.
